Speed traps on wheels: spain deploys mobile speed cameras
Drivers across Spain are facing a new era of speed enforcement. Forget static speed cameras – the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has introduced mobile speed detection units, specifically trailer-mounted radar systems, to patrol roadways. This shift aims to tackle speeding, a persistent problem on Spanish roads, with a new level of unpredictability.

Mobile radar units target speeding hotspots
The new system, currently deployed on the A-1 highway, represents a significant departure from traditional fixed or even static mobile radar setups. These units, towed by vehicles, can be positioned at various locations along a route, making their presence largely unknown to drivers. The DGT claims these units can issue up to 20 fines per minute, a staggering rate designed to deter speeding.
The current installation on the A-1, near exit 45 in the southbound direction, is strategically placed within a construction zone. This is a deliberate tactic, as the DGT reports a high number of speeding violations in areas where roadwork is underway – last year, 15,000 fines were issued for this reason. The reduced speed limit of 100 km/h in the work zone is now actively enforced.
The mobile radars operate for up to two weeks on a single battery charge, communicating violations directly to traffic management centers via internet connection. While the A-1 is the first major artery to receive these units, the DGT intends to expand their deployment across the national road network. This represents a proactive move to address a pervasive issue and, potentially, a significant increase in revenue for the state.
The move isn't without its critics. Some argue that the constant shifting of these radars will simply lead to driver frustration and a feeling of unfair targeting. However, the DGT maintains that the enhanced surveillance will ultimately improve road safety and reduce accidents. The reality? Drivers will need to be far more vigilant, and speed limits will need to be respected – or face swift and costly penalties.
The deployment of these mobile speed cameras signals a hardening stance on speeding. The message is clear: avoiding a fine requires constant awareness.
