Bottas mocks aston martin's struggles, fueling pre-season rivalry
The season’s opening weekend has taken a grim turn for aston martin, a stark contrast to Fernando Alonso's position in the same Grand Prix back in 2013. The team is visibly battling significant issues, a fact acknowledged by rivals like Valtteri Bottas, who hasn't missed an opportunity to subtly – and not so subtly – poke fun at their woes.
Bottas’s barbs highlight aston martin’s difficult start
Following preseason setbacks in Bahrain, aston martin braced for a challenging start to the season. However, the reality seems to be exceeding expectations. While Cadillac, a newcomer to Formula 1, also faces hurdles, their situation is different, born from being a completely new operation. Bottas, however, appears to be enjoying aston martin’s predicament, particularly after escaping a five-place grid penalty from the previous race.
Speaking at a press conference in Australia, Bottas offered a pointed assessment of the season ahead. “If I had to say something now, I’d say Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso, and George Russell. I’d say Mercedes is hiding and I think they’ll beat Aston Martin at the end in Abu Dhabi,” the veteran driver quipped. The irony was palpable, a clear jab at the AMR26’s lackluster performance during testing.
The mockery continued in China. With no significant upgrades available for the race weekend, Bottas reiterated that Aston Martin’s problems, while present, weren't as severe as Cadillac's. “It seems like Aston is in a lot of trouble. We have some too, but at least we were able to finish the race with a car, that’s our strength,” he stated matter-of-factly, after Cadillac’s own challenging race.
However, Bottas’s words might have backfired. The Chinese sprint qualifying session saw both Cadillac cars languishing at the back of the grid, while both Aston Martin cars were positioned ahead. A harsh reality check for the team of Alonso and Stroll. The Finnish driver's comments appear to have stirred the pot, and the results speak volumes.
The pressure is mounting on Aston Martin to find solutions, and Bottas isn't showing any signs of letting up. The team’s struggles are a stark reminder of the competitive landscape of modern Formula 1 – a landscape where even established teams can face unexpected challenges.
