Land rover unveils compact electric defender sport for 2027

Land Rover is betting big on the future of its iconic Defender with a radical new model slated for a 2027 debut. The company has confirmed the arrival of the Land Rover Defender Sport, a significantly more compact and, crucially, fully electric iteration of the rugged off-roader.

The move signifies a major shift for the brand, now operating under the JLR umbrella. While the full details remain under wraps, Land Rover chief executive Mark Cameron has hinted that the Defender Sport will retain the core DNA that defines the Defender – durability and capability – despite its smaller footprint. Cameron revealed to Autocar that the vehicle is "very advanced" and has already been spotted undergoing testing in the UK.

Built on a new electric platform developed by JLR, the Defender Sport is expected to be considerably shorter than the current Defender 90, potentially measuring just over 4.5 meters long. This platform, based on the EMA architecture, is also anticipated to underpin other upcoming electric vehicles from JLR, including the Range Rover Evoque and Velar. A key design choice is the underfloor battery placement, a decision that will impact the vehicle's wheel travel and articulation – trade-offs inherent in electric vehicle design.

While lighter than its gasoline-powered counterparts, the Defender Sport won't abandon its off-road aspirations. All indications suggest it will retain four-wheel drive, potentially with a dual-motor setup, offering respectable levels of traction. Cameron emphasized that the team has focused on preserving the Defender’s core attributes, creating a “red line” that all future Defenders must adhere to.

This isn't just a minor refresh; it's a strategic repositioning of the Defender brand. The challenge for Land Rover, now part of JLR, is to establish a distinct identity for the Defender lineage, mirroring the success of the Range Rover and Discovery lines. A vehicle that is epic, durable, and capable of reaching any destination. That's the promise.

The Defender Sport represents the first phase of a three-year plan designed to solidify the Defender’s future. The company is keen to ensure that every Defender embodies the brand’s core values: robustness and all-terrain prowess. The 2027 arrival will signal whether Land Rover can translate the Defender’s legendary spirit into the electric age.
