Yaris cross gets a serious boost: toyota doubles down on hybrid supremacy

Toyota’s Yaris Cross is dominating the B-SUV segment in Spain, with a staggering 19,374 units sold in 2025 – placing it firmly as the third best-selling model in the brand’s lineup. But don’t expect complacency; the 2026 Yaris Cross is arriving with a significant upgrade designed to solidify its position as the go-to hybrid choice.

A refined evolution, not a revolution

The new Yaris Cross isn’t a radical overhaul, thankfully. It’s a carefully considered evolution that focuses on refining the existing formula – delivering a more premium feel, a bolder design, and a powertrain that’s now firmly centred around Toyota’s 130bhp hybrid system. This is where the real shift lies, and it’s a move that’s likely to appeal to a wider audience.

Toyota’s clearly listened to customer feedback. The front end now boasts a new ‘bee-hive’ grille pattern, finished in body colour, accented by a black lower section and a revised LED headlight signature. New alloy wheel options, ranging from 17 to 18 inches, further enhance the visual appeal, alongside a refreshed colour palette including the striking Precious Bronze paired with a black roof. It’s subtle, but effective – a Yaris Cross that doesn’t shout, but commands attention.

Inside, the cabin receives a welcome boost in perceived quality, with the introduction of platinum-coloured accents on the door panels and dashboard. Previously exclusive features – such as sportier seats with improved lateral support – are now available in lower trim levels, demonstrating a commitment to democratizing the Yaris Cross experience. Expect to find more touches like ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, and an electric rear tailgate in the higher specifications, too. It’s a significant step up in terms of everyday usability and desirability.

Hybrid power, elevated

Hybrid power, elevated

The core of the 2026 Yaris Cross is its powertrain. The 130bhp hybrid system, featuring a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a more potent electric motor, is now the dominant force. Available with both front-wheel drive and a clever AWD-i intelligent all-wheel-drive system, this combination delivers a healthy 185Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.7 seconds. Despite the increased power, Toyota maintains impressive fuel efficiency, with WLTP cycle figures ranging from 4.4 to 5.1 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions between 99 and 115 grams per kilometre – crucially, benefiting from the DGT’s ECO label in Spain.

However, the older 116bhp hybrid powertrain has been relegated to a secondary role, appearing primarily in entry-level versions with front-wheel drive. This streamlining underscores Toyota's unwavering belief in the superiority of the upgraded hybrid setup. It’s a clear signal of intent – the Yaris Cross is a hybrid, and it’s going to be the hybrid.

Performance and refinement

Performance and refinement

Beyond the mechanical and aesthetic improvements, Toyota has focused on refining the driving experience. The car’s lightweight construction, based on the GA-B platform, ensures a low centre of gravity and agile handling. Combined with meticulous efforts to minimize noise and vibration – utilising new soundproofing materials and advanced damping technology – the Yaris Cross delivers a remarkably refined and comfortable ride. The GR Sport variant continues to offer a more dynamic driving experience, with a sport-tuned suspension and distinctive styling cues.

Tech and safety – a comprehensive package

Tech and safety – a comprehensive package

The 2026 Yaris Cross is well-equipped, boasting a cloud-based navigation system, voice control, and wireless smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety is paramount, thanks to the Toyota T-Mate suite of safety features, including parking assist and blind spot monitoring – available on higher trims. It's a well-rounded package, designed to provide both peace of mind and a connected driving experience.

With its enhanced design, boosted performance, and refined interior, the new Toyota Yaris Cross 2026 is poised to continue its reign as a B-SUV leader. Toyota isn’t resting on its laurels; it’s doubling down on hybrid technology and delivering a car that’s both efficient and engaging.
