Westfalia kipling: compact camper van with a clever twist

Introducing the westfalia kipling: a new compact camper

The world of super-compact urban vans is evolving! Previously, accommodating four people comfortably required significant interior modifications. Now, Westfalia, part of the Rapido group since 2010, introduces the Kipling, named after Rudyard Kipling, author of “The Jungle Book.” Built on the proven Ford Transit Custom with a long wheelbase – a platform even Volkswagen utilizes for its new T7 – the Kipling aims to carve out its own niche in a competitive market. It follows on from Westfalia’s Kelsey model, which incorporates a bathroom, shower, and toilet.

Compact design, everyday usability

Compact design, everyday usability

Despite being a mini-campervan, the Kipling, like its sibling, remains remarkably practical for daily use, measuring just under 5.5 meters in length. A key innovation is the fixed transverse bed in the rear, eliminating the need for converting seating. Westfalia achieves this by adding two lateral extensions, creating a bed that's 1.90 meters long and 1.30 meters wide. This offers a surprisingly comfortable sleeping solution for two.

Bathroom amenities (with a caveat!)

A removable cassette toilet is available as an optional extra, housed in a compartment in front of the bed. While a full bathroom isn't included, a gas water heater is present. Showers will need to be taken outdoors, although the connection point is conveniently accessible from the rear. This prioritizes space-saving and a streamlined design, keeping the Kipling compact and maneuverable.

Sleeping arrangements and kitchen convenience

I've had the chance to experience the new Westfalia Kipling firsthand, and the rear layout is surprisingly well-equipped. The fixed bed means it’s always ready for use, a huge advantage over traditional camper conversions. Remarkably, you can cook and sit at the table even with someone sleeping in the rear. While using the toilet during the night might be a bit cramped, it’s a testament to the clever use of space.

A smartly designed kitchen

The kitchen area, located along the sliding door side, is thoughtfully designed. Two lids cover the burners and sink, maximizing counter space. A large, 51-liter refrigerator with a freezer compartment sits conveniently within easy reach. The overall layout feels functional and well-considered, perfect for preparing simple meals on the go.

Storage solutions and versatility

Storage solutions and versatility

Storage is well-addressed with two sliding-door cabinets on the right side and ample space under the rear bed for larger sports equipment. Westfalia's ingenious solution for the transverse bed allows the slatted frame to slide forward or backward, creating either a single sleeping space or even more cargo room. This adaptability makes the Kipling truly special, potentially the universal solution many have been waiting for.

Price and availability

The Westfalia Kipling starts at around €70,000, placing it at the higher end of the compact campervan market. However, considering its innovative design, fixed bed, and clever use of space, it represents a compelling option for those seeking a versatile and compact camper for everyday adventures. It’s a testament to Westfalia’s commitment to quality and thoughtful design in the campervan world.
