Volvo xc70: electric hybrid suv heads west, challenging german giants
Volvo is poised to expand its electric vehicle offerings with the upcoming XC70, a plug-in hybrid SUV already available in China. The model, a significant departure from its traditional rugged predecessor, offers impressive range and a potent powertrain, positioning it to compete directly with established players like the BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC.

Xc70 arrives in europe with extended electric range
The XC70, first introduced in China last summer, represents a complete reimagining of Volvo's adventurous wagon. Gone are the plastic cladding and utilitarian design of earlier generations, replaced by a sleek, modern aesthetic featuring frameless windows and the signature “Thor’s Hammer” headlights. But the most compelling aspect is its powertrain: boasting an 810km electric range and a substantial 400kW of charging power, the XC70’s XXL battery makes even the ambitious EX60 seem modest.
While the EX60’s 93km electric range falls short for some, the XC70 delivers up to 212km on electric power alone, depending on the battery size. A 1.5-liter, 156 hp gasoline engine kicks in when the battery is depleted (21.2 or 39.6 kWh versions), providing an additional 1,000km of range. Charging to 80% takes a brisk 23 minutes – a standard practice in China, but a relatively new development in Europe. Volvo sees this as a key opportunity to appeal to those hesitant about fully embracing electric mobility.
Initial driving impressions in Beijing reveal a well-balanced and refined SUV. However, the European tuning leans toward a softer ride, with steering and suspension feeling somewhat imprecise. The gasoline engine also lacks the punch needed to match the XC70’s elegant exterior. Competitors like the Mercedes GLE, Audi Q6, and BMW X5 will not sit still.
The base model delivers 318 hp and accelerates to 100 km/h in 8 seconds. Opting for the higher-performance variant adds a second electric motor on the rear axle, delivering all-wheel drive and a staggering 462 hp, dropping the 0-100 km/h time to a mere 5.3 seconds – a figure more befitting a sports car than an SUV.
Inside, the XC70 adheres to Volvo’s Scandinavian design philosophy, prioritizing minimalist aesthetics and spaciousness. The 4.82-meter length and 2.86-meter wheelbase ensure comfortable seating for all passengers. With a generous 408-liter trunk – capable of accommodating most cargo without sacrificing the frunk – the XC70 prioritizes practicality. This interior is brimming with driver-assistance systems, minimizing any risk of overcorrection.
While the XC70’s focus is initially on the Chinesemarket, Volvo’s decision to bring it to Europe offers a compelling alternative for those seeking a bridge between gasoline and full electrification. At a starting price of around €51,000, it’s a significant investment, but one that delivers exceptional range, ample space, and the signature Volvo composure. This hybrid offers a compelling compromise, proving that a luxurious, high-range driving experience doesn't have to mean sacrificing the familiar rumble of an internal combustion engine.
The XC70 isn't just another SUV; it's a statement about the future of driving – a future where range anxiety is diminished and practicality remains paramount.
