Sean Lennard reports on a sizzling summer for Triangle foodies, with fresh openings, expansions of beloved favorites, and a wave of new culinary experiences hitting Durham, Raleigh, and beyond. From upscale service to casual bites, there’s something for every palate.
Standard beer + food goes full service
The popular Standard Beer + Food group has upped its game with a new location in North Hills. Trading QR codes for reservations, this spot promises a more refined experience, boasting a wood-fired kitchen, a raw bar, and a slushie selection that’s seriously tempting. Executive Chef Andrea Cardella’s menu focuses on fan favorites alongside innovative new dishes like the Standard Tavern Burger and Swordfish Schnitzel, all sourced locally from Raleigh City Farms, Joyce Farms, and Fox Farm & Forage.

Clouds brewing takes flight
Clouds Brewing is officially open in the former Tobacco Road Sports Café, bringing a welcome dose of craft beer and good vibes to Jones Street. While the menu is currently limited, the team is perfecting their offerings, ensuring a memorable experience for early patrons. Don't miss the chance to sample their house beers, low-intervention wines, and a creative cocktail menu.

New mexican fusion and more
Durham continues to diversify its culinary landscape with the arrival of Beignets & Brew, offering freshly made beignets with decadent toppings, alongside specialty coffees and pastries. Meanwhile, Bubbakoo’s Burritos expands with a new Cary location, serving over a dozen unique burrito combinations, including the Papi Hibachi steak and shrimp burrito. Shinmai Shokudo and Shinmai Kumo are also adding a third concept, Shinmai Moku, to Quail Corners, promising an authentic Japanese yakitori experience. And Woody’s Bar-B-Q, a Jacksonville favorite, has finally made its debut in Fuquay-Varina.
Restaurant news roundup
Even established favorites are expanding. Ideal’s Sandwich & Grocery has doubled its hours, and LongHorn Steakhouse is slated to open in the former Chili’s location at the Renaissance Center. La Grassa Pastificio, sadly, has closed its doors due to health challenges, a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by restaurant owners. But there’s still plenty to celebrate – Porch will be hosting a fundraising event this Sunday, and Left Hook Coffee is launching a circus-themed grand opening next month. Don’t forget to support the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina – your gift will double until July 31st!
