Toyota GR Corolla 2026 Update Boosts Speed and Durability

Toyota’s GR Corolla, a radical departure from the brand’s efficiency-focused ethos, continues to evolve after the success of the GR Yaris. The hot hatch boasts a turbocharged 300-horsepower three-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual transmission.

2026 Update Enhances Performance

The 2026 update doesn’t alter the core recipe but introduces modifications aimed at increased speed, consistency, and durability under intense driving conditions. American Automotive media outlets have tested the updated model and are reportedly pleased with the results.

Improved Acceleration Times

Car and Driver tested the GR Corolla Premium Plus with a manual transmission, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds – the fastest manual GR Corolla they’ve tested. This represents a 0.7-second improvement over the previous model, with a 10.7-second time to reach 100 mph, compared to the previous 11.4 seconds.

Engine Enhancements

The key to the improvement lies in optimizing the use of the G16E-GTS 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine, which produces 300 hp at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 3,250 rpm. Toyota has implemented a secondary air intake to reduce intake air temperature under load, lowering it by an average of 47 degrees Celsius. This modification allowed the car to reach 140 mph 2.5 seconds faster than the previous model.

GR-Four System

The combination of the turbocharged engine, six-speed manual transmission, and GR-Four all-wheel-drive system is considered a significant upgrade, allowing for consistent power delivery.
