Leaving your electric vehicle plugged in to ensure a full charge seems like a prudent move. However, one Tesla Cybertruck owner returned from vacation to find their truck unresponsive, despite being connected to a power source.

The Unexpected Issue

AJ Esguerra, an Arizona resident, routinely recharged his Tesla Cybertruck overnight. Before leaving for vacation, he connected it to his home charging setup, a standard practice. Tesla recommends keeping EVs plugged in during extended periods of inactivity to maintain optimal charge levels and manage electrical needs without excessive battery drain. In this case, the Cybertruck remained stationary for approximately two weeks.

Initially, Esguerra suspected the extreme Arizona heat – often exceeding 40°C (104°F) – had damaged the battery. However, the real problem lay elsewhere: a power converter failure had immobilized the truck.

Tesla technicians confirmed the high-voltage battery was not the cause of the issue, despite the continuous charging and high temperatures. The diagnosis revealed a defect in the power converter, a critical component in the Cybertruck's electrical architecture responsible for converting current and powering various vehicle systems.

This malfunction explains the perplexing situation: a fully charged electric vehicle can be completely inert if a component responsible for distributing or converting energy fails. Esguerra was unable to start the Cybertruck or establish any communication with it, even while it remained connected to the charger.

Resolution and Lessons Learned

Tesla dispatched a team to retrieve the truck and transport it to a service center. After replacing the faulty power converter, the Cybertruck was able to return to service. While technicians didn't establish a direct link between the converter failure and the high heat, the incident underscores a crucial point: a full charge doesn't guarantee protection against all electronic failures.
