Stellantis unveils hurricane 4 turbo: a new engine pushes power density to 162 horses per liter
Stellantis is shaking up the Automotive landscape with the introduction of the Hurricane 4 Turbo, a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine poised to deliver unprecedented power and efficiency. The engine, developed by the automaker's Group, promises to redefine performance expectations in a remarkably compact package.

Stellantis’ hurricane 4 turbo: a technological leap forward
The development of the Hurricane 4 Turbo represents a significant departure from conventional engine design. At its core lies the TJI (Turbulent Jet Ignition) technology, borrowed from Formula 1. This innovative system incorporates a pre-chamber within each cylinder, triggering a faster, more complete combustion process. The result? More power derived from less fuel. Furthermore, the engine features a plasma-transfer wire arc coating on the cylinder walls, replacing traditional cast iron sleeves. This creates a thin, resilient surface that reduces internal friction and enhances heat transfer, contributing to both weight reduction and improved high-pressure resistance.
But the innovations don't stop there. Electronic engine management analyzes data at thousands of points per second, fine-tuning ignition timing and air-fuel mixtures for optimal performance across a spectrum of driving conditions. This adaptive system ensures a smooth ride during relaxed cruising and a responsive burst of power when demanded. The engine also incorporates an air-water intercooler, dual spark plugs, direct and indirect fuel injection, and a variable valve timing system.
Micky Bly, Stellantis Senior VP and Global Propulsion Systems Director, highlighted the engine's impressive capabilities. “The completely new design offers our customers a potent, refined, and smooth-running engine that uses 10% less fuel to deliver 20% more power than our current 2.0-liter DOHC I-4 engine,” Bly stated. This translates to a potential performance jump of considerable magnitude for the automaker’s diverse portfolio.
The Hurricane 4 Turbo is slated for production in the United States and will first appear in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, Stellantis envisions a wide range of applications for this groundbreaking engine across its various brands. The engine operates on the Miller cycle – a design known for increased efficiency. The combination of the variable geometry turbocharger, high-performance combustion, and dual fuel system delivers a staggering 162 horsepower per liter of displacement.
The engine also boasts a sodium coating on the exhaust valves. This detail further enhances performance and durability. The design emphasizes emissions control through its high-pressure direct injection system. Stellantis’ commitment to fuel efficiency is evident here, with a reported 10% reduction in fuel consumption compared to existing engines. The Hurricane 4 Turbo represents a bold step toward a new era of Automotive propulsion—a powerful statement about the future of performance.
The Hurricane 4 Turbo is manufactured in the US. This is a significant move, signaling a potential shift in Stellantis’s supply chain and a commitment to domestic engine production.
The technology promises to reshape Stellantis's offerings. It's a compelling assertion of their technical prowess, and one that competitors will undoubtedly be watching closely.
