Hurricane 4 turbo: bridging the gap between size and performance

The new turbocharged direct-injection engine, born from motorsport innovations, promises immediate responsiveness and consistent torque delivery. Stellantis envisions the Hurricane 4 as a cornerstone for future powertrains, perfectly suited for vehicles demanding significant power without the weight and bulk of larger engines.

What’s particularly innovative is the application of plasma wire arc coating on cylinder walls, replacing traditional cast iron liners. This creates an exceptionally thin, resilient surface drastically reducing internal friction and enhancing heat transfer. This reduction in engine block weight, combined with optimized cooling, allows the Hurricane 4 to operate under high-pressure conditions without premature fatigue, setting a new standard for durability.

The high-pressure direct injection system further enhances performance. Operating at pressures exceeding industry standards, it atomizes fuel with unprecedented precision, leading to near-complete combustion. This translates to increased power and more precise emissions control, aligning with stringent global regulations. The engine’s electronic control unit analyzes thousands of data points per second, fine-tuning ignition timing and air-fuel mixture for seamless urban driving and aggressive performance on the open road.

Stellantis anticipates deploying the Hurricane 4 across a wide range of vehicles, from high-performance SUVs requiring robust torque to sporty sedans. Its compact size and lighter weight allow for improved weight distribution, boosting vehicle maneuverability and enabling designers to optimize interior space and aerodynamics. This structural efficiency is key to the next generation of vehicles aiming to maximize dynamic performance without excessive weight.

“The name Hurricane 4 Turbo is fitting because this engine delivers impressive power. The variable geometry turbocharger, high-performance combustion, and dual fuel system combine to produce 162 horsepower per liter of displacement,” stated Micky Bly, Senior Vice President of Stellantis and Global Propulsion Systems Director.

The new design offers customers a powerful, refined, and smooth-running engine that uses 10% less fuel to deliver 20% more power than the current 2.0-liter DOHC I-4. Stellantis isn’t abandoning traditional combustion engines; they are refining them.

With the introduction of the Hurricane 4, Stellantis reaffirms its commitment to mechanical excellence and continuous innovation. By offering a capable alternative to larger engines with a smarter, more refined format, the company secures a robust transition toward the future of mobility, preserving the passion for driving and superior performance that defines its iconic brands. The shift is not just about efficiency; it’s about redefining what’s possible in a compact package.
