Stellantis and catl's gigafactory revolution in zaragoza

A new era for zaragoza

Stellantis, formerly known as General Motors, has been a driving force in Zaragoza for over four decades. The construction of a gigafactory with CATL is the latest revolution, but their connection to the city dates back to 1981 when they first set up shop in Figueruelas.

In an effort to find affordable land and a peaceful setting close to the factory, hundreds of workers flocked to the small town of Figueruelas. This inspired the creation of Setabia, a cooperative housing community for factory employees.

Now home to around 400 residents, Setabia boasts a century-old collection of chalets with a distinctly American flair. The community's isolation is a double-edged sword – while it provided a tranquil environment, it also means limited access to public transportation.

The struggle for infrastructure

Residents face significant challenges due to the lack of sidewalks, making it perilous for the elderly and younger generations without driver's licenses. The town's municipal status, shared between Utebo and Zaragoza, has led to a standoff over maintenance responsibilities.

Calling for change

Veteran residents like Francisco Navarro and Rosa García urge local authorities to take more ownership of the community's upkeep. They point out that, as taxpayers, they deserve the same services as any other Utebo resident.

A breakthrough in public transport

However, progress has been made in recent years. The introduction of the 700 bus line has provided a vital lifeline for residents, albeit with limited frequency due to the route's extensive coverage area.

The road ahead

As Stellantis and CATL's gigafactory takes shape, the challenges faced by Setabia's residents serve as a reminder of the importance of balancing economic growth with community development. With renewed efforts from local authorities to address the town's infrastructure needs, a brighter future may be on the horizon for this unique suburban oasis.
