Spain unveils ambitious 2030 auto strategy with hefty ev incentives

Spain has made a bold move in its bid to transform the nation's automotive sector and reduce emissions, launching the Plan Auto 2030 and a dedicated program for electric vehicles (EVs) called Plan Auto+.

Plan auto 2030 aims for comprehensive sector overhaul

The overarching Plan Auto 2030 is a 25-point initiative that involves public administrations, companies, and tech hubs. It encompasses key areas such as industry investment, R&D, digitization, charging points, circular economy, and decarbonization strategies.

One of the key focus areas is electrification, with the goal of making Spain a hub for EV manufacturing and sales. The plan has allocated €1.28 billion annually for the next five years to support the purchase of EVs and plug-in hybrids.

Under Plan Auto+, eligible buyers can receive a subsidy of up to €5,500 for the purchase of a new EV. However, this amount is not automatic and depends on various factors, including the vehicle's origin, type, and price.

Electric vehicles under €35,000 will receive an additional 25% of the total subsidy, effectively boosting the assistance to €3,375. For plug-in hybrids and extended-range EVs, this additional amount is capped at 15%, leading to a maximum subsidy of €2,250.

Heavier commercial vehicles and those manufactured in Europe will also receive a 15% boost to their subsidies. Moreover, cars assembled in the EU with European-sourced battery components can earn an additional 10%.

While these incentives are certainly enticing, they come with certain requirements and limitations. For instance, vehicles over 45,000 euros are not eligible for the full 25% subsidy, and those over 50 cc still have a maximum price cap of €10,000.

With these measures in place, Spain is poised to become a major player in the global EV market, providing a significant boost to the country's automotive industry and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable transportation sector.
