Smuggling scheme uncovered at ondara itv: police bust criminal network

Valencia police have dismantled a sophisticated criminal network operating within an ITV (vehicle inspection) center in Ondara, uncovering a scheme to fraudulently certify vehicles unfit for the road. The operation, led by the Guardia Civil, resulted in six arrests, including a Guardia Civil officer allegedly involved in accepting bribes.

The investigation revealed that the Ondara ITV center was certifying vehicles with significant technical issues as roadworthy. Technicians were falsely confirming repairs that never took place, allowing vehicles to pass inspections they previously failed. This posed a serious threat to public safety, with one Madrid resident reportedly spending €3,935 annually on maintenance to keep their car compliant.

The Guardia Civil’s traffic unit was tasked with escorting a large metal structure – 8 meters wide, 4 meters high, and weighing 160 tons – from Pontevedra to Murcia, a seemingly unrelated logistical detail that highlights the scale of operations the police are dealing with.

Six individuals were arrested: employees of the Ondara ITV center and several repeat customers who allegedly orchestrated the fraudulent inspections. Adding to the shock, one Guardia Civil officer is implicated, currently suspended and under investigation for allegedly facilitating the scheme in exchange for commissions. Sources describe the operation as a “door-to-door service,” with all parties involved profiting from the deception.

Those implicated now face charges including document forgery and offenses against road safety. The Guardia Civil is also exploring potential charges of criminal association and corruption. The discovery underscores the vulnerabilities within vehicle inspection processes and the lengths some will go to circumvent safety regulations.

The arrest of the Guardia Civil officer is a particularly damaging blow, raising questions about internal oversight and accountability within law enforcement. This operation serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of organized crime and its ability to infiltrate seemingly legitimate institutions. The investigation is ongoing.
