Ruf shatters porsche legacy: eight-cylinder boxer engine returns

German tuner RUF has ignited a firestorm of Automotive excitement by unveiling the B8, a revolutionary engine that dares to challenge Porsche’s decades-long dominance with the iconic six-cylinder boxer.

A bold rebellion against tradition

For decades, the opposing-piston ‘boxer’ engine has been inextricably linked to Porsche, a defining element of the 911’s character and a cornerstone of the manufacturer’s sporting heritage. Yet, Porsche itself has steadfastly resisted incorporating an eight-cylinder boxer configuration into a production vehicle – a boundary RUF has now decisively breached.

The B8, presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, represents a completely new engine design, meticulously crafted from the ground up by the tuner. This powerhouse boasts a 4.8-liter displacement, paired with twin turbochargers, delivering an astonishing 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 Newton-meters of torque – all without resorting to electrification.

While Porsche experimented with eight-cylinder boxer engines during the 1960s, primarily for competition applications – legendary models like the 907, 908, and even Formula 1 racers utilized this architecture – it never progressed to a road-legal variant. RUF is taking a crucial step forward, bridging the gap between motorsport history and contemporary performance.

Magnus Walker, a name synonymous with RUF’s audacious engineering, is offering 18 meticulously restored Porsche 911s, starting at $45,000. This isn’t merely a display of heritage; it’s a testament to the brand’s unwavering commitment to Automotive excellence.

The B8 is paired with a bespoke six-speed manual transmission, also developed in-house by RUF. This deliberate choice underscores the tuner’s dedication to delivering an unfiltered, analog driving experience – a refreshing contrast to the increasingly digitized world of high-performance vehicles. It’s a deliberate statement against the prevailing trend of hybrid and electric enhancements.

To properly evaluate this new engine, RUF utilized the existing CTR3 platform, necessitating a 100mm extension to accommodate the larger displacement. The result is a visually striking homage to the iconic CTR Yellowbird, instantly recognizable through its distinctive black and yellow livery.

The CTR3 itself has always been a unique chapter in RUF’s history, pioneering a central-engine layout – a configuration Porsche never adopted for the 911. It combines a 911 front structure with a rear tube chassis, a bold and innovative approach.

RUF’s Alois Ruf asserts that the B8 represents “a moment in a company’s history that defines the future.” He emphatically states, “For RUF, the Boxer 8 is one of those moments.” This isn’t simply a new engine; it’s a declaration of intent – a bold step towards redefining the possibilities of the boxer engine.

“The decision to employ the CTR3 was strategic, allowing us to rigorously test the engine’s limits without attracting excessive attention,” explains Ruf. “There are few Porsches like the RUF CTR3. But of the 928, there is only one. And it doesn’t come cheap.”

Magnus Walker, elaborating on the design philosophy, says, “I wanted the graphics to tell the story of the car even before the engine roared to life. Every line represents movement, and the fluid form of the number eight became a natural symbol – not just for the new boxer engine, but for our relentless pursuit of refinement.” He adds, “Combined with the unmistakable ‘Blossom Yellow’ of the CTR Yellowbird, the design honors our legacy while confidently looking toward the future.”

Currently, RUF hasn’t confirmed the specific model slated to receive this groundbreaking powertrain, as the Goodwood prototype remains a development platform. The B8 represents more than just a new engine; it’s a statement of intent, a challenge to conventional wisdom, and a potent reminder of RUF’s unwavering commitment to Automotive innovation.
