Polestar unleashes 'beast' division, challenges performance giants

The quiet dominance of Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, and Audi RS is fracturing. Polestar has thrown a grenade into the high-performance Automotive landscape with the unveiling of BST, a new sub-brand poised to directly compete with the German behemoths.

The Swedish automaker confirmed months of speculation, signaling its entry into the realm of ultra-performance vehicles. The BST division, named after “Beast,” represents a significant strategic shift for Polestar, aiming to capture the attention of discerning drivers seeking more potent machines.

The project, a six-month endeavor involving a 20-person team and over 1,800 parts, marks a decisive step for the brand. Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller outlined the ambition to deliver a more consistent line of high-performance vehicles, focusing on track prowess, acceleration, and overall superiority. This move comes after a challenging period for Polestar, including the recent closure of its UK R&D facility.

The company secured a $900 million loan from its parent company, Geely, to navigate financial losses. While the R&D center was responsible for the Polestar 5 design, Lohscheller expressed optimism about the future. He believes BST will allow Polestar to vie for market share alongside established players like BMW M, Mercedes-AMG, and Audi RS.

BST will evolve from a limited-production experiment with the Polestar 2 BST Edition into a full-fledged sub-brand. The goal? To directly challenge the Audi RS 5, potentially launching a “Beast” version of the Polestar 2, Polestar 3, and Polestar 4 by 2026.

This isn't just about matching horsepower; it's about redefining Polestar's identity. The company is betting that a more aggressive performance focus will resonate with a growing segment of the market. The success of BST will hinge on execution – a bold move that could reshape the electric performance car segment.

Lohscheller didn't divulge specifics about the first BST models, but the ambition is clear: to deliver a compelling alternative to the established performance hierarchy. The stakes are high, and the competition is fierce.

Polestar’s vision is not merely to play catch-up; it’s to redefine the very notion of electric performance. The gamble is substantial, but the potential rewards—and the disruption—are even greater.
