Two years ago, Nissan unveiled the Y63 generation of the Patrol, codenamed Y63. But down under, the aging Y62 – the last Patrol to sport a 5.6-liter VK56VD V8 – is nearing its final days of production, slated to cease local assembly this August. More than 258,000 Patrols, powered by that magnificent V8, have graced Australian roads since the G60 debut in 1961 – a lineage tracing back to Datsun. From the dusty tracks of the Simpson Desert, first traversed by Reg Sprigg and his team in 1962, to a record 15 consecutive wins in the Australian Off-Road Championship (1983-1998), the Patrol has cemented its place as a genuine icon.

While the Y62 Patrol has arguably fallen behind the current benchmark – the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 – it retains a unique selling point: that raw, visceral V8 punch. With 400 horsepower and 560 Newton-meters of torque, it delivers a soundtrack that’s simply unmatched by its turbocharged rivals. And, let’s be honest, the Patrol’s enduring popularity speaks for itself.

But the times are changing. Nissan is shifting its focus to the Y63, which will debut later this year with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. This represents a significant leap forward in terms of refinement, performance, and safety, alongside a more contemporary design. Customers in Australia have a final, limited opportunity to acquire a Patrol V8 – a chance to own a piece of Automotive history.
