Mercedes cla navigates euro 7: new engine & electric options emerge
The looming euro 7 regulations
The Automotive landscape is shifting as Euro 7 regulations prepare to take effect, imposing stricter limits and restrictions on new cars. European automakers are already adapting, and Mercedes-Benz is at the forefront with innovative solutions to ensure their popular models remain competitive. This includes significant development work on engines like those found in the Golf GTI and the introduction of a groundbreaking new gasoline engine for the CLA.

Introducing the m252 engine: a hybrid approach
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the M252 engine, a revolutionary 1.5-liter gasoline engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This system incorporates a 27-horsepower electric motorintegrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission, alongside a 1.3 kWh battery. This combination allows the engine to meet the stringent demands of the upcoming Euro 7 standard while maintaining the driving experience enthusiasts expect.

New cla generation: design and electric power
The latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLA showcases a dramatic redesign and a significant technological leap. Notably, it debuted with a fully electric version (CLA 200), marking the first time this model offered an all-electric powertrain. This was subsequently followed by combustion engine variants featuring the innovative M252 engine, solidifying Mercedes’ commitment to diverse powertrain options.
Performance and efficiency of the m252
The M252 engine is currently available in two power outputs: 136 hp and 190 hp. While acceleration differs – 8.8 seconds (0-100 km/h) for the CLA 180 and 7.2 seconds for the CLA 220 – efficiency is remarkably similar. Both versions achieve impressive fuel economy figures, with the 190 hp version consuming just 5 liters per 100 km and the 136 hp version at 4.9 liters/100 km – figures previously associated with diesel engines.
Electric cla options: range and performance
Beyond the hybrid options, the CLA 200 electric model delivers 224 hp and a respectable range of 542 km. Higher-tier models like the CLA 350 4MATIC (354 hp) boast even greater range, reaching up to 768 km on a single charge. The CLA 250+ (272 hp) offers a range of 790 km, making the electric CLA a compelling option for long-distance driving.
Euro 7 compliance and future adjustments
Currently homologated to Euro 6e-bis (effective from January 2026), the M252 engine is expected to readily adapt to the Euro 7 standard. While minor adjustments may be required, they are anticipated to be less drastic than those faced by performance vehicles like the BMW M5. The focus remains on ensuring the engine’s longevity and appeal for a broad customer base, even as electrification becomes increasingly prevalent.
