McLaren Revives 1960s Racing Spirit with McL 6 GT
McLaren's iconic F1 model may be one of the most revered road cars in history, but the British marque is far from resting on its laurels. In fact, they're looking to the past to inspire their future with the McL 6 GT, a manual-transmission supercar set to debut in 2028.

McLaren Revives 1960s Racing Spirit with McL 6 GT
The story begins with Bruce McLaren, the company's founder, who sought to bring the thrill of competition cars to the streets. His vision was the M6GT, a production-ready sports car that almost made it to market but ultimately only a handful of units were built. Now, more than 50 years later, McLaren is revisiting that concept with the McL 6 GT.
While the car you see in these images is a pre-production prototype, it's remarkably close to the final product. This supercar reinterprets the key design and mechanical elements of the M6GT, with a focus on analog driving pleasure. Under the hood, it packs a V8 engine paired with a manual transmission – a first for McLaren since the 1990s F1.
"The McLaren McL 6 GT is a vision of what our inspiring founder would have desired to complete, but with six decades more of innovation and passion woven into every one of its elements, creating a modern icon of connection with the driver," said McLaren CEO Nick Collins.
The goal is to pay homage to Bruce McLaren's vision while also capturing the essence of classic supercars, which often relied less on modern technology and more on the driver's skill and connection with the machine. As McLaren puts it, "Each gear change, each accelerator pedal movement, and every steering wheel rotation are designed to be perceived as deliberate, physical, and gratifying actions that connect the driver to the machine."
This mechanical character extends beyond the transmission system, with hydraulic steering, tactile controls, and visible engineering details all contributing to a sense of purity and participation for the driver.
While we'll have to wait and see if these promises translate to an exceptional driving experience, the McL 6 GT's focus certainly promises something unique. The car's design, too, reinterprets the M6GT style with an absolute respect for its original characteristics. Unlike McLaren's typical approach, which often emphasizes extreme sportiness, the McL 6 GT takes a more understated approach, blending classic lines with modern flair.
Whether it will be enough to set it apart in a crowded supercar market remains to be seen, but McLaren's dedication to its heritage and driving principles is undeniably admirable. With the McL 6 GT, the brand is giving fans a glimpse into what could have been, while also forging a new path forward.
