Man unleashes etgm: electric truck set to disrupt mid-range logistics

German Automotive giant MAN Truck and Bus has sent shockwaves through the commercial vehicle sector with the global unveiling of its new electric truck, the eTGM, at Transpotec Logitec in Milan. This isn’t just another electric vehicle; it’s a calculated move to completely reshape the mid-haul and distribution landscape.

The eTGM, a 16-tonne vehicle, slots perfectly between MAN’s lighter eTGL models and its heavier eTGS and eTGX electric siblings, establishing a zero-emission portfolio spanning from 12 to 50 tonnes. This strategic addition demonstrates MAN’s unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive, sustainable solutions for modern logistics needs.

At the heart of the eTGM lies the cutting-edge MAN eCD210 electric motor, delivering a formidable 285 horsepower and an instant 800 Newton-meter of torque. Paired with the advanced MAN TipMatic 2 automated transmission, this powertrain optimizes performance based on load and terrain, ensuring exceptional efficiency even in congested urban environments.

Crucially, the vehicle incorporates a sophisticated regenerative braking system, capturing energy during deceleration – a feature particularly vital for urban operations. This not only extends brake life but also boosts overall energy efficiency, pushing the boundaries of industrial transport sustainability. The modular battery architecture allows customers to configure the chassis with between two and four battery packs, tailoring the investment and weight to specific operational demands.

MAN’s close collaboration with leading body builders from the outset – integrating standardized connections, optimized wheelbase dimensions, and mechanical power take-off options – guarantees seamless integration of familiar body types, including refrigerated units and curtain siders, minimizing the need for costly retrofits. The interior design mirrors the ergonomics of MAN’s diesel range, with intuitive controls and a clear focus on driver comfort, while clearly indicating electric system performance.

Early estimates suggest a range of up to 480 kilometers on a single charge, making the eTGM ideally suited for demanding regional transport and logistical operations. With a standard permissible gross weight of 16.01 tonnes, and an optional increase to 16.5 tonnes, the eTGM offers significant payload capacity, further enhanced by the ability to connect a compatible trailer, achieving a maximum authorized gross weight of up to 33 tonnes. Tobias Wagner, Elektrotrucker, is currently undertaking a transatlantic challenge to prove the eTGM’s viability – a testament to its technological prowess.

“We’re not just building a truck,” Wagner stated. “We’re demonstrating the potential of electric mobility to transform the way goods are moved across continents.”
