Leapmotor unveils b05 ultra: electric hot hatch set to challenge gti
A fiery electric contender is brewing. Leapmotor’s B05 Ultra, a performance-focused variant of their compact EV, threatens to disrupt the hot hatch segment just as Peugeot launches its e-208 GTi – a direct rival.

A 345bhp electric rocket
This isn’t just another electric car; it’s built on the same platform as the Lancia Ypsilon HF and Opel Corsa GSE, packing a potent 281bhp powertrain. But the B05 Ultra takes things a step further, boasting a significantly upgraded engine in China, delivering a blistering 345bhp and 320Nm of torque directly to the rear wheels. That’s a punch that puts it comfortably on par with the legendary Volkswagen Golf GTI – a benchmark in the compact sports car arena.
Francesco Giacalone, Leapmotor’s European sales and marketing director, is cautiously optimistic. “Following the considerable interest and testing conducted in China, we are seriously considering bringing this car to Europe,” he stated. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive.”
The B05 Ultra is currently sold in China as the Lafa 5 Ultra, a sibling model with enhanced performance. It features a sport-tuned chassis, a 50:50 weight distribution, and a sophisticated multi-arm rear suspension – a testament to its dedicated sporting pedigree.
Beyond the powertrain, the Ultra receives a comprehensive visual upgrade: a more aggressive front spoiler, a rear wing reminiscent of the Golf R Mk8, and eye-catching color options – Trueno Yellow, Stardust Green, and Liquid Silver. These aren’t just cosmetic tweaks; every component has been meticulously engineered to enhance both aesthetics and performance. Leapmotor is aiming for a 0-62mph time of just 5.9 seconds – a figure that mirrors the GTI’s impressive acceleration.
Interestingly, Leapmotor's C01 sedan recently received an additional motor in China, transforming it into a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive vehicle with a staggering 536bhp. Should they pursue a similar strategy for the B05 Ultra, we could be looking at a truly exceptional electric hot hatch. Giacalone hinted at the possibility, stating, “If technically feasible and the sales volume justifies it, we would certainly consider all-wheel drive.”
Technical specifications are still emerging, but the B05 Ultra is expected to utilize a 220bhp electric motor and a battery pack ranging from 56.2 to 67.1 kWh, potentially offering a WLTP range of up to 434km. Its dimensions – 4.430mm long, 1.880mm wide, and 1.520mm high – align with the compact class, while the LEAP3.5 architecture, shared with the B10, suggests a refined and efficient platform.
But the real story here isn't just about numbers. It's about demonstrating that electric performance can be genuinely thrilling. And, frankly, after years of incremental improvements, the Automotive industry is finally starting to listen. Let’s just hope this B05 Ultra proves that electrifying the hot hatch formula isn't just a trend, but a genuine revolution.
