Land rover unveils electric 'baby defender' by 2027

Land Rover is signaling a bold new direction for its iconic Defender with the upcoming launch of a compact, all-electric model slated for 2027. The 'Defender Sport,' as it's tentatively named, represents a significant departure from the rugged, traditional image of the off-road vehicle, yet promises to retain the core DNA that has defined the Defender for decades.

Smaller, smarter, and electrified: a new era for the defender

The move signifies a strategic pivot for the brand under the JLR umbrella, aiming to establish a distinct identity for the Defender lineage, much like Range Rover and Discovery have done. Details emerging from sources close to the development suggest the Defender Sport will be considerably smaller than the current Defender 90, measuring just over 4.5 meters in length on JLR’s EMA platform. This platform is also expected to underpin future electric vehicles from the company, including the Range Rover Evoque and Velar.

While the smaller dimensions might impact wheel travel and articulation compared to the current model, Land Rover engineers are focused on leveraging the benefits of a floor-mounted battery pack. This design contributes to a lower center of gravity and improved handling, essential for an electric vehicle. The aim is to retain a robust character, and while it won't match the current Defender's extreme off-road capabilities, all indications point to a four-wheel-drive configuration, possibly with a dual-motor setup.

Mark Cameron, Land Rover’s CEO, emphasized the importance of preserving the Defender’s core attributes. “Our design and engineering teams have created that red line, the circle that every Defender must have. That’s the DNA,” he stated. This “Baby Defender” is the first phase of a larger plan, announced three years ago, to revitalize the Defender brand and ensure it remains relevant in the rapidly evolving Automotive landscape. The goal is to create a vehicle that is epic, durable, and capable of reaching any destination – even if that destination is a charging station.

The shift to electrification is a calculated risk. JLR is betting that a smaller, more efficient Defender Sport will appeal to a broader audience, particularly in urban environments. The integration of the EMA platform is a key element of this strategy, allowing for rapid development and scalability across the JLR portfolio. However, the challenge lies in balancing the traditional Defender spirit with the demands of a modern, electric vehicle.

The vehicle’s lightweight construction, facilitated by the new platform, is another area of focus. While this will contribute to improved energy efficiency, it also presents engineering challenges in maintaining the Defender's renowned robustness. The company is reportedly exploring advanced materials and structural designs to mitigate any potential compromises in durability.

Production is anticipated to commence in 2027. The Defender Sport arrives at a pivotal moment in the Automotive industry, where electric vehicles are rapidly gaining traction. Land Rover’s success will hinge on its ability to translate the Defender’s legacy of capability and character into a compelling electric offering. The stakes are high; the Defender is more than just a vehicle – it's a cultural icon.
