Jaguar’s bold gamble: type 01 signals a luxury revival
Jaguar is betting big on its future, abandoning years of cautious strategy with a radical new supercar, the Type 01, poised to challenge Porsche and Bentley.
A return to form? the ‘type’ legacy resurrected
Rumors of a high-performance GT and the even more audacious X900 have been swirling, but the unveiling of the Type 01 marks a decisive shift. Jaguar’s leadership, headed by CEO Rawdon Glover, is clearly aiming to reclaim its position at the pinnacle of the luxury performance segment. This isn’t merely a new car; it’s a statement.
The concept harkens back to Jaguar’s iconic ‘Type’ nomenclature – a deliberate nod to the legendary E-Type – alongside the ‘0’ and ‘1’ designations, suggesting a completely new era for the marque. Glover emphatically dismissed the notion of a hybrid variant, stating, “The most important thing is that it won’t be bought just because it’s an electric car. People buy these cars because they want to imagine themselves getting out of them, because they want it to look impressive, and because they want it to be a relaxing interior.”

Electric performance – a 986-horsepower revolution
Beneath the striking design – which, frankly, looks like a sculpted shard of obsidian – lies a powertrain that’s genuinely breathtaking. Jaguar is aiming for a combined output of 986 horsepower, drawing power from a twin-V12 configuration, a move considered audacious even in the early 90s when the Ford GT90 project was briefly entertained. That ambitious plan, involving the integration of two V8s to create a V12, ultimately fell by the wayside, but the spirit of innovation persists.
The Type 01 will be built on a completely new platform, leveraging Jaguar’s Electric Architecture (JEA). It’s packing an 850-volt system, a 120 kWh battery pack, and a trio of electric motors – one driving the front axle and two powering the rear. Expect a blistering 0-60 mph time approaching three seconds. That’s a performance figure that puts it squarely in competition with the Bugatti Veyron’s original output.

Personalization and luxury – a new dimension
But the Type 01 isn’t just about raw power. Jaguar is prioritizing personalization, offering unprecedented options for bespoke configurations. The vehicle’s weight, however, is a significant factor – clocking in at 2,700 kilograms, approximately 550 pounds heavier than the Porsche Taycan. That extra mass is largely attributable to the enormous battery, promising a range of up to 700 kilometers (435 miles) on a single charge and a rapid 320-kilometer (200-mile) charge in under 15 minutes.
“If you buy a car like this, and you want to personalize it, you generate much more revenue,” Jaguar stated, highlighting their strategy for high-end sales. The starting price is anticipated to be around £130,000, potentially climbing to £160,000, with orders opening in the second half of the year. Despite this ambitious endeavor, Jaguar remains comfortably positioned as the ‘low-cost’ player among luxury automakers, with Bentley and Rolls-Royce commanding prices well above £300,000.

Final thoughts
Rawdon Glover’s focus on exceptional service and a flawless execution suggests a commitment to delivering a truly premium experience. The Type 01 isn't simply a car; it’s a calculated risk, a bold declaration of intent, and a potential turning point for Jaguar. Let's see if they can deliver on the promise.
