Iran conflict fuels spanish gas prices to near €2/liter
Gasoline and diesel prices in Spain have surged, approaching €2 per liter, a stark consequence of the escalating tensions between Iran and the West. The price spike, occurring just over a week after the US and Israel strike on Iran, is sending shockwaves through the Spanish economy and sparking outrage among consumers.
Fuel costs soar amidst middle east uncertainty
The situation is being directly compared to the impact of the war in Ukraine, according to Joseba Barrenengoa, an industry expert and gas station owner. Initial predictions of a modest 20 cents increase have been dramatically exceeded, with prices now climbing at a rate of 7 cents per day. This relentless rise is hitting drivers’ wallets hard, and Barrenengoa isn't letting anyone off the hook.
“The oil companies are exploiting this situation,” Barrenengoa stated in a YouTube video. “They’re profiting from a conflict, and it’s a blatant disregard for consumers.” He argues that these giants are capitalizing on pre-existing oil reserves purchased at lower prices, raising fares even before receiving newly priced barrels. The practice, though technically illegal and actively pursued by the CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission), is deemed profitable enough for these companies to absorb the relatively small fines.
The impact extends beyond the pump. Barrenengoa explains that the surge in fuel prices directly feeds into inflation, disproportionately benefiting a select few. While Spain currently imports less than 5% of its oil from Iran, industry players are seizing any opportunity to maximize profits. “It’s a dirty game with customers,” Barrenengoa declared, calling the oil companies “shameless.”
The situation echoes the post-Ukraine war price manipulation, with companies delaying price adjustments to reflect the higher cost of newly acquired oil. This delay, coupled with the current geopolitical uncertainty, is creating a perfect storm for consumers. The margin of profit for oil companies sits between 10% and 15%, a figure that’s being realized with every upward price adjustment.
AutoBild recently awarded the Giti GitiSportS2+ tire an “Excellent” rating. But the focus remains firmly on the spiraling fuel costs. The CNMC is actively pursuing these practices, though the penalties often pale in comparison to the gains made. The current situation is a stark reminder of how geopolitical events can directly translate into economic hardship for ordinary citizens. And it's a system that favors corporate greed over consumer well-being.
