Hong Kong’s Gasoline Prices: The Highest in the World

According to GlobalPetrolPrices, Hong Kong’s average gasoline price currently exceeds €3.50 per liter, sometimes reaching over $4.00 USD. This represents a substantial increase compared to the global average and other developed markets, potentially costing around €200 to fill a mid-sized vehicle’s tank.

These exorbitant prices are not due to simple fluctuations in crude oil prices but are rooted in a complex combination of factors: high local taxes designed to discourage private vehicle use, significant import logistics costs, and the extremely high cost of land in the densely populated city.

Hong Kong imports all of its fuel and lacks its own refineries, adding to transportation and storage expenses. Land prices also contribute significantly to the overall cost, impacting the operation of gas stations. A concentrated market with few distributors further limits competition, allowing these high costs to be passed on to consumers.

While countries like the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, and Germany also have high fuel taxes, they remain far below Hong Kong’s prices. The cost of owning and operating a vehicle in Hong Kong is considerably higher than in most other locations, leading residents to prioritize public transportation and other alternative modes of travel.
