Ford electrifies madrid markets: new delivery scheme sparks green revolution
Madrid’s bustling market halls are getting a serious upgrade – and a whole lot greener – thanks to Ford’s bold expansion of its ‘Electricity By Ford’ initiative. The automaker is deploying fleets of zero-emission E-Transit Custom and E-Transit Courier vans to five key markets across the city: Barceló, La Paz, Las Águilas, Chamberí, and Prosperidad.
A game changer for madrid’s traders
After a successful pilot program that ‘electrified’ the Mercado de la Cebada and El Rastro, Ford is rolling out this transformative strategy, backed by the Ayuntamiento of Madrid and Metrae (Confederación de Mercados Tradicionales de Abastos de España). This isn’t simply about slapping a ‘green’ sticker on a vehicle; it’s a strategically deployed solution to a very real problem – navigating the increasingly complex landscape of Madrid’s Low Emission Zones (ZBE) and restricted delivery hours.
For traders, the challenge of transporting goods and collecting deliveries within the city’s restricted zones has long been a significant operational hurdle. Now, Ford is offering a tangible advantage: the E-Transit models boast a generous 21:00 to 7:00 AM charging window and enjoy free, unrestricted parking in both blue and green SER spaces. This is more than a marketing campaign; it’s a demonstrable benefit for those operating within the city’s commercial heart.
“Facilitating access to 100% electric vehicles empowers hundreds of traders to make their operations more sustainable and contribute to a cleaner city,” states Jesús Alonso, CEO of Ford España. The move strategically aligns with Madrid’s commitment to becoming a world-leading arboreal city, solidifying the city’s environmental credentials.

Strategic partnership drives momentum
Guillermo del Campo, Vice President of Metrae, emphasized the initiative's organic evolution, stemming from the initial pilot at the Mercado de la Cebada and El Rastro. “This agreement with Ford represents the natural culmination of a process,” he noted. “The mandate to implement Low Emission Zones across more than 50,000-inhabitant Spanish capitals necessitates a significant shift in the Automotive fleet, and our traditional markets are absolutely central to this transformation.”
Ford’s approach isn’t about grand pronouncements; it’s about practical solutions. Recognizing that widespread EV adoption requires more than just enthusiasm, the automaker is addressing infrastructure limitations and the realities of longer journeys. The E-Transit vans, deployed around the Barceló market, are a visible testament to this pragmatic strategy.
However, the benefits extend beyond mere environmental compliance. Del Campo highlights that the choice of Ford as a partner is deliberate, citing the breadth of their electric commercial vehicle range – a crucial element in accommodating the diverse needs of Madrid’s traders. Looking ahead, both parties anticipate a sustained collaboration that will continue to drive sustainability and efficiency across Spain's traditional markets.

Madrid 360: fueling a greener future
The Ayuntamiento de Madrid, represented by Councillor Carlos Segura, sees these partnerships as “fuel” for Madrid 360, the city’s sustainability program. “This type of collaboration is vital to ensure Madrid 360 operates effectively without compromising the economic viability of small businesses,” Segura stated. “Madrid has been recognized as a world arboreal city for six consecutive years, and we’re committed to upholding the environmental standards set by the European Union through our Madrid 360 brand.”
Ford’s ‘Electricity By Ford’ initiative isn’t just a rollout of vehicles; it’s a calculated move to integrate electric mobility into the fabric of Madrid’s commercial life. The temporary deployment of the E-Transit Custom and E-Transit Courier at the Barceló market – scheduled to conclude in late June, followed by monthly rotations across the other markets – signals a serious commitment to long-term sustainability. Ultimately, this represents a powerful alliance between industry and city, paving the way for a more efficient and ecologically conscious future for Madrid’s vital markets.
