It seems like Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford, is looking to expand his influence. The executive appears to be aiming beyond leading one of the world's largest automakers, now setting his sights on the fast-food industry. Farley has joined the board of McDonald's.

Farley's busy schedule

Jim Farley is clearly keeping busy at Ford. While the company's sales remain strong, the global Automotive sector faces numerous challenges, including declining car demand and the ongoing shift towards electric vehicles. Ford has also decided against scaling back its production of smaller cars, prioritizing profitability over luxury vehicles. Amidst all this, Farley has taken on another significant challenge: joining the board of one of the world's largest fast-food chains.

Farley officially joined the board of McDonald's on February 4th, giving the Golden Arches access to one of the most dynamic leaders in the Automotive industry. His addition brings the board's total number of members to 13.

Farley's comments

“McDonald’s is one of the most admired and recognized brands in the world,” stated Farley. “I have always respected the way the company balances scale with local entrepreneurial spirit and tradition with innovation.” He added, “It is an honor to join its esteemed, values-based board and I look forward to contributing to McDonald’s next era of growth.”

Mcdonald's perspective

McDonald's welcomes Farley's appointment. The multinational corporation believes his experience in modernizing global brands and leading complex organizations will guide its next phase of growth. Farley is also leading Ford's Ford+ transformation, a strategy focused on digital innovation, customer-centric design, and operational modernization.

Farley's extensive experience

  • Ford: Former roles include overseeing Ford Europe, Middle East & Africa; Marketing, Sales & Global Services; Lincoln brand reinvention; and operations in Canada, Mexico & South America.
  • Toyota: Spent nearly 20 years at the global giant, including its luxury brand, Lexus, in various leadership positions.

The appointment of Farley is not the first board change at McDonald's in recent years. The company states that half of its directors have joined since 2022 as part of a broader renewal to prepare leadership for the future. This move also comes as Farley prepares to step down from a board position at Harley-Davidson.
