China's solid-state batteries aim for 1,500km range, challenging global leaders

China is poised to leapfrog Europe and the United States in battery production, announcing a solid-state battery series with the potential to deliver an unprecedented 1,500km range. Chery's Battery Night 2026 unveiled the Rhino S series, a development that could reshape the electric vehicle landscape.

The ambitious goal stems from a significant investment – over €1.27 billion – signaling a determined push to dominate the electric vehicle revolution. The Rhino S battery boasts a 400 Wh/kg energy density, a substantial improvement over current market offerings. This translates to a potential range of up to 1,500 kilometers on a single charge, effectively alleviating range anxiety – a major hurdle for EV adoption.

Chery plans to initially deploy this technology in the Exeed ES8, slated for a 2027 launch. However, the company envisions wider application across its lower-range brands, Omoda and Jaecoo, potentially disrupting established players like BYD and Dongfeng, who are also developing similar high-capacity batteries. The Exeed ES8 will be the first vehicle to test the technology in real-world conditions.

The implications of this advancement are vast. If the ES8 meets its projected range, large-scale production of solid-state batteries could commence as early as 2026. Furthermore, Chery aims to surpass BYD's Blade Battery 2.0, which boasts a 500km range recovery in just 8 minutes and a 5,000-cycle lifespan. The company is aiming for a 600 Wh/kg energy density, representing a considerable leap in performance.

The move comes as consumer satisfaction with gasoline and diesel vehicles remains relatively stable, with 92.7% of owners reporting contentment, according to the CIS. Yet, the allure of extended range and faster charging is a powerful driver for EV adoption. Chery is aiming for charging times comparable to refueling a conventional vehicle – a prospect that could significantly accelerate the transition to electric mobility.

The Rhino S series represents more than just a technological upgrade; it’s a strategic bet on China’s dominance in the future of Automotive power. The race to develop and deploy advanced battery technology is intensifying, and Chery is aggressively positioned to lead the charge.
