Chery's lepas l8 arrives: new luxury ev suv targets spain

The Spanish market just gained a new contender in the electrified luxury SUV segment. The Lepas L8, marking the debut of Chery's new Lepas brand in Spain, is slated to hit dealerships in the second quarter. This mid-size SUV promises generous dimensions, advanced tech, and a highly efficient plug-in hybrid system.

Lepas l8: a blend of style, power, and electric range

With a length of 4.69 meters, a width of 1.87 meters, and a height of 1.69 meters, the L8 slots into the mid-range of the SUV spectrum, clearly geared towards families. Its 2.8-meter wheelbase translates to a spacious interior and a healthy 507-liter boot. Lepas’ “Leopard Aesthetics” design language emphasizes fluid lines and a robust stance. Notice the distinctive vertical “pupil” headlights and the full-width rear light bar – a growing trend. A large front grille adds a premium touch, complemented by body cladding, roof bars, and a rear diffuser.

Inside, the Skyline Cabin prioritizes technology and comfort. A large vertical touchscreen dominates the center console, supported by an 8155 chip for seamless interaction. A digital instrument cluster sits behind the steering wheel, and the cabin can accommodate up to five passengers.

The Lepas L8 rides on Chery's new LEX platform, designed for various powertrains. The initial offering is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combining a 1.5-liter turbo engine with two electric motors, delivering a combined 279 horsepower and 365 Nm of torque. The 18.4 kWh battery provides up to 100 kilometers of electric-only range, with a total combined range exceeding 1,300 kilometers when the gasoline tank is topped up. The official combined fuel consumption (when the battery is depleted) is 4.2 l/100 km. A longer-range version with a 32 kWh battery, offering 180 km of electric range and around 1,400 km total, will follow later.

The Lepas L8 boasts over 20 advanced driver-assistance systems, including automatic parking and remote parking functions. While pricing hasn't been officially announced, expect a figure around €45,000, given the pricing of the Jaecoo 7 SHS – a similar model from Chery’s portfolio already available in Spain.

The arrival of the Lepas L8 signals Chery's serious intent in the European market. The company, also behind Omoda and Jaecco, is clearly aiming to disrupt the premium SUV landscape. This isn’t just another EV; it’s a statement.
