Chery unveils diesel plug-in hybrid pickup, expanding global reach
Chery's expanding global footprint
Automotive giant Chery is poised to further expand its presence in Spain by 2026, introducing a new brand alongside its existing offerings of Omoda, Jaecoo, and Ebro. This strategic move highlights Chery’s ambition to capture a larger share of the European market. But the news doesn't stop there; Chery has just revealed a groundbreaking concept: the KP31 UTE, featuring a unique diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Introducing the kp31 ute: a hybrid first
The KP31 UTE concept was unveiled at a technology-focused hybrid event in Sydney, Australia. This marks the first time a pickup truck will feature a plug-in hybrid system combining a diesel engine and electric power. Production is slated for the fourth quarter of 2026. According to Lucas Harris, Chery’s Director of Operations in Australia, the KP31 represents “the next step” in bringing innovative vehicles to the Australian market.

The innovative diesel phev powertrain
What truly sets the KP31 apart is its innovative powertrain. Chery is leveraging a turbocharged 2.5-liter diesel engine, boasting a thermal efficiency rating of 47% – a significant improvement over the industry average. This translates to a projected 10% increase in fuel efficiency compared to conventional diesel systems. The KP31 will also maintain impressive capability, with a competitive 1,000 kg payload and a 3.5-ton towing capacity.

Addressing noise and vibration concerns
While diesel engines are known for producing noise and vibration, Chery has proactively addressed this issue. The KP31 is engineered to reduce vibrations by 30% compared to traditional diesel engines. This focus on refinement aims to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable driving experience without compromising the power and reliability of a diesel engine.

Rugged design and specifications
The KP31 Concept Pick-Up exudes a commanding presence with its robust design. Measuring a substantial 5.61 meters in length (though the production model will be reduced to 5.45 meters), 1.92 meters in width, and 1.92 meters in height, it's built for adventure. Key design elements include bold branding, a snorkel, all-terrain tires (285/70 R17), and a matte gray finish, further emphasizing its off-road capabilities.

Launch plans and future developments
Chery plans to initially launch the KP31 in Asian and Oceania markets later this year. Expansion into other regions, including Europe, is not ruled out. A gasoline-powered plug-in hybrid version is expected to join the lineup in 2027. Further details regarding power output and performance specifications will be released as the launch approaches. Chery’s commitment to this unique powertrain configuration clearly signals a desire to differentiate itself from competitors and innovate within the pickup truck segment.
