Car Fires Fuel Extinguisher Debate in Spain

Spain is experiencing particularly severe wildfires this summer, impacting the environment significantly. While many fires have originated from vehicles – specifically gasoline-powered cars – the idea of electric vehicle fires persists as a myth.

Is it Legal to Carry an Extinguisher in Your Car?

Many drivers are wondering if carrying an extinguisher inside their vehicle is a viable preventative measure. While it's a sensible precaution, legality is a key consideration. Currently, transporting an extinguisher in Spain is not prohibited by law, though it’s not mandated either.

The regulations don’t explicitly require it, but also don’t forbid it, provided the extinguisher is properly installed and secured, preventing it from becoming a projectile during sudden braking or an accident. Proper mounting – in the trunk or firmly anchored to the vehicle’s chassis – is crucial.

The legislation doesn’t specify a particular location, but emphasizes that any carried object must not compromise safety during driving. Furthermore, an extinguisher installed in a vehicle will not cause issues during an ITV (vehicle inspection) as long as it’s securely fastened and doesn’t interfere with safety systems or controls.

The Reglamento General de Circulación (RGC) doesn’t mandate extinguishers for passenger vehicles, focusing instead on traffic regulations.
