Byd accelerates electric charging: a game changer for european adoption

The era of charging times holding electric vehicles back is officially over. The work being done by companies like BYD – particularly their rapid charging technology – represents a monumental leap forward for electric mobility. I recently witnessed firsthand in China the astonishing growth of BYD’s Flash Charging system, already gaining traction in Europe where the brand is deploying its first of 3,000 chargers slated for the continent by year’s end.

Revolutionizing refueling: byd’s blade battery

Just over a month ago, the Chinese giant unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery in the Sealion 8, Seal 08, and refreshed Han. This new battery architecture effectively eliminates a key bottleneck for manufacturers – the inability to handle ultra-fast charging. The Blade Battery promises to move from 10% to 70% charge in a mere 5 minutes at ambient temperatures, and just 9 minutes to reach 97% capacity – with extreme cold temperatures only shaving off a scant 3 minutes.

Infrastructure & performance – a parallel advance

Infrastructure & performance – a parallel advance

This fundamentally alters the electric vehicle landscape. BYD has removed one of the biggest hurdles for these vehicles, offering charging times comparable to refueling a traditional combustion engine. Naturally, this speed requires a corresponding charging infrastructure. BYD has been simultaneously developing a network of ultra-fast chargers boasting power outputs exceeding 1.5 MW. Currently, this network spans over 6,100 stations across China – a figure the company intends to double in the coming months as they expand beyond domestic borders, establishing facilities in incredibly diverse locations, from the high-altitude plains of the Tibetan Plateau near Everest, to urban centers across more than 300 cities worldwide.

European expansion & competitive threat

European expansion & competitive threat

Looking ahead, BYD is set to install an additional 6,000 ultra-fast chargers across Europe before the year’s end, with 3,000 earmarked for the Old Continent. The rollout is already underway, with the recent inauguration of the first rapid charger in Germany marking a significant milestone. This ambitious expansion poses a serious challenge to Tesla’s Supercharger V4 network, potentially offering a fourth of the charging power – a truly remarkable acceleration.

The z9 gt: a showcase of the technology

And it’s not just theory. The Denza Z9 GT, based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo and equipped with the Blade Battery 2.0, exemplifies this capability. It can fully charge from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes. This isn’t a mere commuter car; it’s a five-door performance vehicle packing nearly 1,000 horsepower and achieving 0-60 mph in a blistering 2.7 seconds. Let’s be clear: this level of performance doesn’t come cheap. In Spain, the Denza Z9 starts at €115,000. While a standard Z9 is available in China, starting at approximately €34,000, the high-performance version – boasting 496 horsepower and a claimed range of 1,036 kilometers – is not yet offered in Spain, though its arrival, fueled by this charging revolution, will undoubtedly reshape the European EV landscape.
