Byd accelerates city car game with lidar and extended range
BYD is injecting a serious dose of competition into the urban EV market with significant upgrades to its Dolphin Surf, effectively repositioning it as a genuine contender against established players like Tesla.
New lidar and enhanced autonomy take center stage
The Chinese automaker’s latest iteration of the Dolphin, now dubbed the Seagull in its domestic market, incorporates a new LiDAR sensor, paired with DiPilot 300, promising a more advanced semi-autonomous driving experience. This ‘God’s Eye B’ system adds features like city navigation assistance, traffic light recognition, and automated lane changes – a level of sophistication rarely seen at this price point, typically reserved for higher-end vehicles exceeding €30,000.

Sales surge and new design touches
Despite the Tesla Model 3 and Y dominating Spanish sales figures – with the Dolphin Surf securing 1,876 registrations in the first half of the year – BYD’s strategy is clearly paying off. The model’s impressive price-to-quality-to-range ratio is resonating with consumers. And now, the Dolphin Surf is getting a refreshed aesthetic, including eye-catching new colors like Mango Orange and Mint Green, alongside redesigned wheel options up to 16 inches.

Under the hood: more power and range
Beyond the visual updates, the core mechanics receive a boost. The Dolphin Surf 2026 is equipped with a 55 kW (74 hp) motor and available in two battery configurations: a 30.08 kWh pack offering 305 km of range, and a 38.88 kWh unit extending that to 405 km. While acknowledging the typically optimistic figures from the Chinese CLTC cycle – which often exceed European WLTP standards – analysts anticipate a real-world range of around 350 kilometers for the European variant.

Tech upgrades and competitive pricing
Inside, the cabin receives a significant overhaul, featuring a vibrant 12.8-inch DiLink multimedia system with 3D capabilities and personalized navigation. Convenience features abound, including wireless charging, heated seats, and driver monitoring systems. The starting price of €22,365 – with sales slated to begin this summer – firmly undercuts rivals like the Kia EV3 and puts the Dolphin Surf squarely in the affordability zone, a key factor driving its popularity.

A bold move for byd
This isn't just a mid-cycle refresh; it's a strategic repositioning. BYD is demonstrating a commitment to delivering a compelling urban EV experience at a price that challenges the European market. The competition is intensifying, and it’s clear that the Dolphin Surf – and BYD as a whole – is here to stay.
