Bmw confirms i3 touring: electric family car arriving in 2026
BMW has officially confirmed the arrival of the i3 Touring, a fully electric wagon set to broaden the appeal of its upcoming i3 lineup. The announcement, made during a presentation in Munich, signals a significant step for the automaker in electrifying its range and directly challenging the dominance of gasoline-powered SUVs in the family car segment.
I3 touring to mirror sedan's tech and range
The i3 Touring, slated for release in late 2026 or early 2027, will closely mirror the design, technology, and powertrain of the recently revealed i3 sedan. This includes the new Neue Klasse design language, featuring a redesigned kidney grille, updated headlights, and flush door handles. While the Touring will boast a longer roofline and a new tailgate, the interior is expected to remain largely unchanged, retaining the i3's distinctive vertical infotainment screen and minimalist dashboard.
Under the skin, the i3 Touring will utilize the same 800-volt electrical architecture and high-density battery pack that delivers up to 900 kilometers of range in the sedan. A dual-motor setup, producing a combined output of 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque, ensures brisk acceleration. The car supports 400 kW DC fast charging, capable of adding 400 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes.
This move isn't just about expanding the i3 family; it also aligns with BMW M's plans for electric touring models. Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, has previously hinted at future all-electric M3 Touring variants, suggesting a growing commitment to performance-oriented electric vehicles. The i3 Touring offers a compelling alternative to existing electric family cars, promising a blend of practicality and futuristic technology.
The launch of the i3 Touring represents a bold assertion of BMW's electric future. It’s a statement that goes beyond simply electrifying existing models; it’s about creating a new category of vehicles that appeal to both environmentally conscious consumers and those seeking a stylish and technologically advanced family car. The electric wagon isn't just coming; it’s arriving to redefine family transportation.
