Alpine a290 gts: electric thrills arrive – but at what cost?
Renault has consistently impressed with its retro-inspired electric models like the 5 and Twingo, crafting appealing urban 'lifestyle' EVs. However, the brand’s sporting ambitions have lagged. Alpine aims to rectify this with the A290, and the GTS variant delivers a surprisingly potent performance.

Alpine a290 gts: a surprisingly agile electric
The top-spec GTS boasts desirable features: 19-inch wheels, leather trim, and a premium audio system. But the real differentiator is the Alpine Telemetrics Expert, an integrated interface displaying performance data like tire and battery temperatures, along with coaching challenges to enhance driving engagement.
While top speed remains modest – a common trait in EVs – the A290 GTS accelerates with impressive immediacy. Steering becomes noticeably heavier as the electric motor unleashes its torque, and the suspension, though firm over bumps, effectively absorbs bumps on winding roads. The Michelin Pilot Sport 5S tires are the star of the show, providing exceptional grip. Cornering speeds are remarkable, braking distances are top-tier, and the electric motor maintains its power even after aggressive track sessions. The A290 GTS clocked a 1:44.76 lap time at the Sachsenring, edging out the conventional Mini JCW by approximately three-tenths of a second.
The A290 GTS isn't just about gadgets. It offers tangible advantages. The performance is genuinely impressive, largely thanks to the outstanding tires. The car's agility in corners and braking prowess stand out in the subcompact EV segment. However, this performance comes at a price. The asking price positions the A290 GTS squarely in premium territory, raising the question of whether the gains justify the cost.
The Renault Symbioz Eco-G remains a unique offering with its dual fuel tanks, 120 hp, ECO label, and a remarkable 1,400 km range.
The Alpine A290 GTS proves that electric doesn't have to mean compromise. It’s a clever little car that delivers exceptional performance, largely due to the phenomenal tires. But the premium price tag might deter some.
