Alpina's diesel d3: the luxurious high performer
Alpina's D3 has long been a niche gem, offering a unique blend of luxury, performance, and economy. When it first emerged in 2005, the idea of a diesel-powered Alpina seemed counterintuitive. But the brand was savvy to the growing demand for efficient, high-performance vehicles in Europe.
The original 2.0l turbo diesel
Based on the BMW E90 3 Series, the initial D3 featured a heavily revised 2.0L four-cylinder turbodiesel engine from BMW, tuned to produce 200 horsepower. The Biturbo variant bumped that up to 214 horsepower, impressive figures for a compact diesel engine even by today's standards.
But the D3 was more than just a quick motor. It boasted Alpina's signature suspension tweaks, distinctive multispoke wheels, and an indulgent, handcrafted interior. This was a car built for devouring autobahn miles in utmost comfort, not for attacking curves like a hot rod.

Evolution and the 3.0l biturbo era
Later generations saw Alpina switch to BMW's 3.0L six-cylinder biturbo diesel, a move that catapulted the D3 into a whole new league. The F30 and G20-based models packed 350 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and blistering acceleration that left many gas-guzzling sports cars in the dust.
Top-spec D3 S Touring variants even cracked the 355 horsepower and 730 Nm torque barrier, rocketing from 0-100 km/h in under 4.5 seconds while still managing relatively modest fuel consumption. The perfect blend of luxury, performance, and pragmatism.
Today, the D3 remains a rare breed, offering a unique fusion of high-end refinement and economical diesel power. Prices may start at around €10,000 for early models, but even newer, low-mileage examples can fetch upwards of €50,000 or more.
