Ac schnitzer shuts down bmw tuning after 36 years

After more than three decades of enhancing BMWs, renowned tuner AC Schnitzer is ceasing modifications of the marque in 2026. The decision marks the end of an era for the company, which rose to prominence in 1987 with a modified E32 7 Series and gained further recognition with bespoke creations, including a Michael Jordan-commissioned 850i.

Rising costs and shifting market dynamics force closure

The company cited escalating costs associated with aftermarket component design, development, and manufacturing as the primary driver behind the closure. A particularly significant hurdle has been Germany's protracted homologation process, which has left AC Schnitzer lagging behind international competitors. “If we only can bring parts to market eight or nine months after the competition, that speaks for itself,” stated CEO Rainer Vogel.

Vogel also highlighted a broader challenge: a diminished appeal to younger clientele seeking the visceral driving experience that AC Schnitzer once synonymous with. Coupled with evolving consumer preferences, a turbulent global market – marked by tariffs, raw material cost increases, and volatile exchange rates since 2020 – and the gradual shift away from internal combustion engines, the pressures became unsustainable. The decision, Vogel conceded, was a difficult one for the family-owned business, but one made with a long-term view of the Kohl Group’s stability.

Founded in Aquisgrán in 1987 by Willi Kohl and Herbert Schnitzer under the Kohl automobile GmbH umbrella, AC Schnitzer’s history is steeped in motorsport success. Beyond BMW, the company has competed in touring cars and rallies, achieving world records with modified M6 and 335i models. Their reach also extended to brands like Mini, Range Rover, and Jaguar. The Kohl Group is currently in discussions with potential buyers for AC Schnitzer, though regardless of a sale, existing inventory will be liquidated before year-end. The closure represents a significant loss for BMW enthusiasts and a poignant chapter in the history of Automotive customization.
